What are they and what were their roles? ..

A council (Latin concilium, assembly), or synod (ancient Greek sun-odos = common path) is an assembly of bishops of the Catholic Church (Roman or not) or orthodox. The Second Council of Nicaea is an ecumenical council which occurred in 787.
